my 7 Wonders of the Fashion Blogging World - Fashion She Says

Hello ladies and welcome to the 2nd part of my '7 Wonder' series. Today I bring you a lady with a massively enviable designer and vintage wardrobe. I've been following this lovely lady for about 6 months now and am always in awe of the stunning pieces she has acquired, and the interesting way she styles them. Headbands, necklaces, belts, scarves and even bracelets are interchangeable to the best effect. She mixes vintage items and straight off the catwalk pieces with beautiful effortlessness. Enough of me talking, see for yourself.

Say hello to Fashion She Says!

What’s your name & where do you come from?

My name’s Becca & I’m from NYC (born & raised).

What’s your blog name & why did you name it that?
I named my blog Fashion She Says because I wanted to express its purpose in a sonorous-sounding way: Fashion She Says explores fashion, film, literature & art.
How long have you been blogging & why did you start?
I’ve been blogging for almost one year (since July 2009). I started a personal style blog because I wanted a place where I could share inspirational photographs & my thoughts on fashion.

What’s your everyday job?
My blog is my everyday job! I used to work in advertising but recently decided to pursue my blog (& passion for fashion) full time.

How would you describe your style?
My style is a capricious collage of vintage-Victorian-whimsical-haute-bohemian-Lolita. It’s subject to my mood, making it difficult to plan an outfit, but resulting in a look perfectly representative of me in that moment.

What/who inspires your fashion choices?
Movies, magazines/books, photographs/art & bloggers/street style inspire my fashion choices. My style also pays homage to past style icons, including Edie Sedgwick, Little Edie Beale & Nan Kempner.
Do you believe in following trends?
I follow my heart, not trends. Trends are simply new ideas & I experiment only if I feel a connection to them. I dress for confidence/comfort or risk being self-conscious in my clothes. I can always change outfits before I leave my apartment (although my best looks aren’t over-thought) but fully commit to what I’m wearing once I’m out.

Where do you stand on high street copy cats of designer pieces?
We’d all buy designer in an ideal world… High street copycats are the Robin Hoods of fashion: they steal from the rich (designers) to give to the poor (shoppers on a budget). Vintage is the ideal solution to the high street versus designer dilemma; literally what comes around goes around & my best vintage no-name clothes rival my contemporary designer pieces.

Most of you wear vintage items; do you have a favourite type of item you look for, or is there a specific era you like?
Vintage is my favorite fashion genre (especially jewelry & headpieces/fascinators) because it turns shopping into a treasure hunt. The best eras were for Victorians, flappers, flower power & housewives. Previously worn clothing is a turn-off for some people, but I find it romantic to imagine an item’s karma from its old owner – shoes & underwear are probably the only pieces I wouldn’t buy vintage.

What’s the most memorable outfit you have ever worn?
I don’t have a “most memorable outfit”; my favorite part of each day is figuring out what to wear: usually a fancy frock toned down with ballet flats. I get dressed starting with a specific item, not an event, & don’t shy away from being overdressed.

Have you ever made a really bad fashion faux pas?
I don’t believe in fashion faux pas… Style is subjective; there are no right/wrong answers. Fit is the determining factor in how clothing looks & even if I don’t consider a certain item fashionable, I can still appreciate it if it hangs well on my frame.

Do you have a favourite designer or new emerging designer?
My favorite designers are Anna Sui & Phillip Lim because their clothes make me feel grown-up but girlie. Ms. Sui has the best prints, luxe fabrics & nouveau hippie styles. Mr. Lim is a young designer but has modern feminine shapes & couture-like embellishments.

What one item couldn't you live without?
I couldn’t live without a pair of jeweled Miu Miu ballet flats & strawberry Lip Smacker chapstick.

What’s your style tip for this season?
My style tips for all seasons are white dresses & Twiggy-like eyelashes.

If you could have any celebrity wardrobe, who’s would it be & why?
Many celebrities use stylists; I like Patricia Field & Rachel Zoe, but the celebrity wardrobes I covet most are from films: Kate Hudson in Almost Famous, Audrey Hepburn in How to Steal a Million, Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette & Amy Adams in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.

Who are your favourite bloggers?
I love to read style blogs but ironically don’t have as much time to since I started my own. However, I always try to keep up with my top two bloggers: Jane from Sea of Shoes (http://seaofshoes.typepad.com/sea_of_shoes) & Krystal from What is Reality Anyway (http://www.whatisrealityanyway.com).

What is your favourite Fashion Magazine & is there a specific reason?
I adore fashion magazines… Blogs offer instant gratification, but it’s so luxurious to get glossy stylish pages in the mail. My favorite fashion magazine is Vogue: the US edition for Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour & Creative Director Grace Coddington; Vogue Nippon for Fashion Director Anna dello Russo; & Teen Vogue for Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley. These women are the dictators of my fashion world.

Are there any models/photographers/clothes store/etsy store/online store (generally anything) you love right now?
My loves… Models: Iekeliene Stange, Vanessa Paradis, Jean Shrimpton & Twiggy. Photographers: Man Ray, Richard Avedon & Annie Liebovitz. Clothing store: Bergdorf Goodman.

What one tip would you give to new fashion bloggers now that you have a successful blog?
My biggest tips for fashion bloggers would be to post lots of clear personal style photos, blog consistently & participate in the blogosphere. I’m proud to have posted something every single day since I started my blog & also of the amazing people I’ve gotten to know around the world through our mutual fashionable love.
